In 2007, Residents set up an IPS Bencom in order to raise public funds to buy the former Infants School. £15k worth of PLEDGES was promised, demonstrating demand and interest in serving the public through social enterprise. The abiding and the enduring aim of the Abergavenny Community Trust is to manage a public asset for the wider prosperity and lasting benefit of the people who live in and around Abergavenny, both now and in the future.
(In 2010) The Charity Commision announced that a new CIO (Charitable Incorpated Organisation) legal model would be coming on line. (Rolled out in 2015)
In 2012, the Abergavenny Community Centre Ltd, IPS Bencom [Industrial Provident Society for the benefit of the community] was dissolved because the legal model no longer served the needs & direction of the incorporated body.
Not able to adopt the CIO model the ACC [Abergavenny Community Centre] directors sought advice and established the Abergavenny Community Trust Ltd - a private [not for profit distribution] company limited by guarantee.
The ACT began trading in March 2015 when the Abergavenny Community Centre opened, and in the Summer of 2016 Directors commenced the Charity Commission process. There was an unforseen false-start, and in September 2017 the directors/trustees/friends made a new application to the Charity Commission for Abergavenny Community Trust to be a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
The Abergavenny Community Trust has applied to the Charity Comission to become a registered Charity
